Cricklade was a contested town in the upper Thames valley during the Anarchy, changing hands between Stephen and Matilda. Imperial and royalist garrisons used it as a base for raiding the surrounding countryside. Stephen garrisoned it during his push into the southwest but imperialist raids frequently disrupted supply lines.
