The Battle

History & Significance

While William the Lion was a prisoner in England after his capture at Alnwick, Scottish nobles who had chafed under his authority took advantage of the power vacuum to rebel. Loyalist lords -- and some who saw opportunity in restoring order -- suppressed these risings. The period of William's captivity (1174-75) was one of the most turbulent in his reign, with simultaneous revolts in Galloway, Moray and among the Norman baronage.
