History & Significance

After Stirling Bridge, Wallace demonstrated Scottish power by devastating Northumberland. The raid was partly punitive for English atrocities in Scotland, partly logistical plunder. The sheer scale of destruction traumatised the county and forced Edward I to give the northern defense his personal attention
