The Battle

History & Significance

Henry Percy, first Earl of Northumberland, conducted periodic retaliatory chevauchees into Scotland during the 1370s as Warden of the East March, burning settlements and driving off livestock in response to Scottish incursions. These Percy raids were licensed by the crown and formed part of the rhythm of border warfare that characterised the period between the Wars of Independence and the Otterburn campaign of 1388. Percy's operations maintained English prestige in the March and provided income through plunder for the border lords who participated.
