The Battle

History & Significance

The Flemish mercenaries landing in East Anglia used the Deben and Ore estuary approaches to land on the Suffolk coast in support of Hugh Bigod's rebellion. Royal coastal patrols attempted to intercept the landings but the flat coast offered many possible landing points. The naval and coastal dimension of the 1173-74 revolt showed how sea-borne mercenaries could reinforce English baronial rebellions.
