History & Significance

Newcastle's army met the Fairfaxes' Yorkshire army on Adwalton Moor near Bradford. Parliament appeared to have the better of early fighting when a Royalist regiment advanced unsupported and broke the Parliamentary line. The defeat was catastrophic: Bradford fell, Leeds fell, and Yorkshire was all but lost. Lady Anne Fairfax was captured; Lord Fairfax escaped to Hull; Thomas Fairfax escaped by night through Royalist lines. Only Hull and its immediate environs remained Parliamentary.
