The Battle

History & Significance

After the destruction of the first York castle, William I immediately constructed a second motte-and-bailey fortification on Baile Hill on the south bank of the Ouse, opposite the first castle site. The two fortresses created overlapping fields of fire covering the river crossing. When the Danish fleet arrived later in 1069 and stormed both castles simultaneously, the garrison was overwhelmed despite this dual defence.
