History & Significance

The Battle of Rhunahaorine Moss took place on 24 May 1647 at Rhunahaorine Point in Kintyre, Scotland. The engagement was fought between Covenanter forces under General David Leslie and Royalist forces commanded by Alasdair Mac Colla Chiotaich, also known as Sir Alexander MacDonald. The Covenanters defeated the Royalists in the battle.

Following the defeat, the remnants of Alasdair Mac Colla's Royalist army fled to Kinlochkilkerran, where a fleet of birlinns transported many of the troops to Ireland. Others made for Dunaverty Castle, also intending to reach Ireland or Dunyvaig Castle. In the aftermath of the battle, Largie Castle at Rhunahaorine, the home of the MacDonalds of Largie, was razed by the forces of General David Leslie.
