History & Significance

During the Second Barons' War, Warwick Castle was seized by de Montfortian forces as part of their effort to control the Midlands. The castle's position on the Avon, commanding the route between London and the north, made it strategically important. Its capture gave the rebels a significant base in the Midlands. After Evesham, it reverted to royal control. The castle that stands today — one of England's finest medieval fortifications — was substantially built up in the following centuries.
