The Battle

History & Significance

James Douglas commanded the Scottish right wing at Bannockburn on 24 June 1314. His division pressed the English left and pursued the retreating enemy after the main English formation broke. Douglas's cavalry later conducted the pursuit that prevented any orderly English withdrawal, capturing numerous magnates and killing many in the rout. After Edward II escaped, Douglas pursued the king's party toward Dunbar, demonstrating the completeness of the Scottish victory.
