History & Significance

Brough Castle guarding the Stainmore Pass — the main route across the Pennines — was taken by Scottish forces in 1174. Its fall opened the road into Yorkshire for the Scottish army. Both Brough and Appleby were recovered after the capture of William the Lion ended the invasion.
