The Duke of Perth and Lord Drummond raised their tenants and clan adherents around Crieff in Strathearn at the outset of the 1715 rising. Crieff was the location of the great annual cattle tryst and was the commercial gateway between Highland and Lowland Perthshire. Lord Drummond's muster at Crieff brought in substantial numbers from Strathearn and the southern Highland glens. Government forces in Stirling and Perth could only watch as this assembly proceeded. The Drummond country formed a significant part of Mar's Perthshire contingent.
