The Battle

History & Significance

Owain Gwynedd at the height of his power raided into Cheshire, threatening Chester itself. The earldom of Chester was the key English power facing Gwynedd and repeated Welsh raids during the disorder of King Stephen's reign pushed the frontier east and demonstrated Welsh military dominance in the north. Owain would fight off Henry II in 1157 from this position of strength.
