History & Significance

The Lincolnshire Danelaw rose in support of the Danish fleet in the Humber in 1069, with local English and Danish settlers joining the rebellion against Norman authority. Lincoln itself was a stronghold of resistance given its overwhelmingly Danish population. The rising was coordinated with Edgar Aetheling's operations in Yorkshire and represented the most dangerous southern extension of the Great Revolt.
