In the days before the main battle on 27 July 1689, Dundee's advance cavalry and Mackay's government scouts clashed repeatedly at the southern approach to the Pass of Killiecrankie. The famous gorge of the River Garry, where the pass is at its narrowest, was contested ground as both commanders reconnoitred the terrain and sought to control the pass. Dundee was determined to bring Mackay to battle on his chosen ground above the pass; Mackay was determined to force through and relieve Blair Castle. These advance skirmishes set the stage for the main battle.
