The Battle

History & Significance

Tickhill Castle in Yorkshire was held in Prince John's interest during Richard I's captivity. On Richard's return in 1194 the castle was besieged by royalist forces. The garrison surrendered when John's rebellion collapsed after Nottingham fell. Tickhill was one of several northern castles recovered in Richard's rapid suppression of John's revolt on his return from Germany.
