The Battle

History & Significance

Gwenwynwyn ab Owain of Powys Wenwynwyn launched aggressive campaigns against the English Marcher lords in the 1190s following the death of the Lord Rhys. He captured and destroyed Radnor castle and threatened the balance of power in the southern March. This campaign demonstrated that Powys could still mount serious military challenges to English power before Gwenwynwyn overextended himself at Painscastle in 1198 and suffered a catastrophic defeat.
