Mar's army of 12,000 men at Perth required enormous quantities of food, fodder and fuel. Jacobite foraging parties ranged through Perthshire, requisitioning supplies from the countryside. Government-sympathising tenants and Presbyterian farmers were coerced into providing provisions. These supply operations involved numerous confrontations and minor violence. The burning of Auchterarder and nearby villages — to deny shelter to Argyll's army — was the most notorious of these operations, destroying civilian homes in the depths of winter.
