Edward I constructed a prefabricated peel at Linlithgow in 1301 as a supply depot and garrison point for his western Scottish campaign. The construction required armed protection against Scottish interference. Scottish forces repeatedly attacked the construction parties and supply convoys. The peel represented Edward's method of establishing forward bases to sustain his campaigns, each requiring constant military protection during construction.
