The Battle

History & Significance

Rob Roy MacGregor brought a force of MacGregors to the Battle of Sheriffmuir in support of the Jacobite cause — but his participation was characteristically opportunistic. He positioned his men on the flank and observed the fighting, reportedly plundering the baggage of the losers (both Jacobite and government forces) when the battle ended inconclusively. Contemporary accounts suggest Rob Roy used the battle's confusion for his own ends. His non-commitment became legendary and tarnished his Jacobite reputation, though his broader career as outlaw and Jacobite agent continued.
