William Wallace was betrayed near Glasgow — tradition names John de Menteith as the man who handed him over — and transported to London for trial. He was subjected to a show trial in Westminster Hall where he denied being a traitor on the grounds that he had never sworn allegiance to Edward. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Smithfield on 23 August 1305. His quartered body was displayed at Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling and Perth as a warning. His death made him a martyr and ultimately strengthened Scottish resolve.
