History & Significance

After his landing at Passage East, Strongbow besieged and took Waterford — the first major city to fall to the Normans. He immediately married Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Mac Murchada, cementing his claim to Leinster. Waterford became the Normans' main port for reinforcements and supplies.
