The Battle

History & Significance

On 24 June 1314 Edward Bruce commanded the Scottish left division at Bannockburn. His schiltron pressed toward the Carse ground and engaged the English right wing, preventing any flanking movement and maintaining the cohesive Scottish advance. Edward Bruce's men drove their opponents steadily backward toward the Bannockburn stream, contributing to the compression of the English army into the boggy ground between the burn and the River Forth that made orderly retreat impossible.
