Doune Castle on the River Teith, a magnificently preserved medieval stronghold, was seized by Jacobite forces during the 1745-46 campaign and used as a prison for government officers taken at Prestonpans and Falkirk. John Home, the playwright, was briefly imprisoned there and made a dramatic escape by knotting bedsheets. The castle's position between Stirling and Perth made it a useful Jacobite logistics point during the siege of Stirling Castle. Several hundred government prisoners were held at Doune through the winter of 1745-46.
