History & Significance

Earl Hugh Bigod of Norfolk, rebelling against Henry II, arranged for a Flemish mercenary force to land on the Suffolk coast to reinforce the baronial rebellion. The landing was contested by local royal forces and the mercenaries caused considerable devastation in the coastal hinterland before linking up with Hugh Bigod at Framlingham.
