The Battle

History & Significance

By 1318 Scottish raiding had reached Lancashire for the first time. Morays forces burned Lancaster and ranged through the county collecting tribute and booty. Lancashire had no defensive force capable of opposing a Scottish army. The extension of raiding this far south demonstrated that Bruce had achieved something no Scottish king before him had managed: the effective military domination of all of northern England. The psychological and economic damage to the north accelerated English pressure for a peace settlement.

Forces Involved

Moray with mounted Scottish force; no English field army
