History & Significance

Guthred mac William -- another claimant to the Scottish throne through the MacWilliam line -- launched a major revolt from the north in 1211-12. He gained widespread support in Ross and Moray. The revolt was defeated by Ferchar mac Taggart, the powerful Ear of Ross who was loyal to William the Lion. Guthred was captured and executed. Ferchar was rewarded with an earldom for his services -- one of the last great Gaelic earls to be created in Scotland.
