After the victory at Inverurie in May 1308, Bruce moved on Aberdeen, the principal burgh of the north-east, which submitted to him. The town and its castle provided Bruce with an administrative and logistical base for the subsequent operations against the Comyn territories in Buchan. Control of Aberdeen, with its harbour and merchant wealth, gave Bruce access to trade and tax revenues essential for sustaining his growing army.
