History & Significance

Edward I expelled the Jews from England in 1290. Royal officers were deployed across the country to enforce the expulsion, seize remaining property, and ensure all Jews departed by 1 November. Some Jews were robbed and killed during the process, including a shipload drowned deliberately near the Thames estuary by a captain who stole their property. Royal sheriffs conducted the forced removal using armed authority.
