History & Significance

John Gordon of Glenbuchat was one of the most loyal Jacobite commanders across three separate risings — 1715, 1719 and 1745. In 1715 he raised his Strathdon men and operated in the upper Don valley, securing northeast Scotland for Mar's army. His raids suppressed government sympathisers and levied men and supplies from the Deeside and Donside glens. Glenbuchat was a fierce and determined partisan whose activities in 1715 made the northeast a secure Jacobite zone. He survived all three risings and died in exile, never betraying his cause.
