Taymouth Castle at the head of Loch Tay in Highland Perthshire was the seat of the Earl of Breadalbane, one of the most calculating politicians in Scotland. In 1715, Breadalbane Campbells assembled here for the rising. The castle sits in the heart of Campbell country — but these were Breadalbane Campbells, distinct from the Argyll Campbells who supported the government. The muster at Taymouth brought in men from around Loch Tay and the southern Breadalbane glens. Government forces in Stirling watched the Jacobite assembly across the Highland edge with alarm but could do nothing to prevent it while Argyll's army was needed to hold the Stirling line.
