The Battle

History & Significance

Lord Cromartie's Jacobite detachment operated in Sutherland in the weeks before Culloden, attempting to suppress the pro-government Sutherland and MacKay clans. Dornoch — the county town of Sutherland with its ancient cathedral — was briefly held by Cromartie's force. The Sutherland militia under the Earl of Sutherland contested the area. Cromartie's operations were ended when his force was surprised and captured at Golspie on the morning of Culloden — depriving the Jacobite main army of several hundred men at the critical moment.
