History & Significance

Rhys ap Thomas, the dominant Welsh magnate of the south, assembled his forces at Carmarthen after Henry Tudor landed at Milford Haven. Rhys had initially sworn to Richard III that Henry would only enter Wales over his body; he reportedly lay under a bridge as Henry marched over it. He brought a force of several thousand Welsh soldiers who formed the core of the Tudor army that defeated Richard III at Bosworth.
