History & Significance

Owain Gwynedd expelled his own brother Cadwaladr from Wales in 1152 after Cadwaladr hired Norse-Irish mercenaries in a dynastic dispute. The expulsion was part of the constant inter-dynastic competition within Gwynedd that made strong principalities difficult to maintain across generations. Owain and Cadwaladr had previously fought together at Crug Mawr 1136. Cadwaladr returned to Wales after making peace and the brothers were reconciled before Owain's death in 1170.
