History & Significance

While Richard I was in captivity in Germany, his chancellor William de Longchamp seized Windsor Castle in an attempt to hold it against Prince John who was conspiring to seize control of England. Longchamp besieged the castle but John s forces held it. The confrontation between Longchamp and John revealed the crisis of governance during Richard s absence and led to Longchamp s eventual exile.
