The Battle

History & Significance

The Duke of Buckingham's revolt against Richard III in October 1483 drew significant support from the Sussex and Kent gentry. When the revolt collapsed — Buckingham was captured and executed — Richard III systematically punished the southern gentry who had supported it. Many Sussex knights including those connected with Bodiam forfeited estates. The revolt's failure suppressed southern opposition to Richard but ensured those men subsequently supported Henry Tudor.
