History & Significance

Domhnall Dubh — grandson of the last Lord of the Isles — escaped from prison and raised a revolt in 1503 that briefly threatened central Scotland. James IV moved rapidly to suppress the rising. The threat to Stirling itself was brief but demonstrated that ten years after the forfeiture of the Lordship, the MacDonalds retained enough support to mount serious military operations on the mainland.
