History & Significance

Glyndwr forces burned the English borough of Welshpool in 1401, demonstrating the ability of the rebellion to strike at the administrative infrastructure of English power in the Welsh March. Welshpool was a key market town and its destruction disrupted the English economic life of Montgomeryshire. The raid followed the success at Hyddgen and showed the rebellion was expanding south from its original base in north-east Wales.
