History & Significance

A farmer named William Bunnock (or Binning) drove a hay cart into Linlithgow Peel with armed men hidden under the hay. As it passed through the gate, the men burst out and killed the guards while Scots who had been hiding nearby rushed in. Bruce's systematic recovery of Scottish castles was accomplished by such stratagems rather than by formal siege — his men lacked the heavy equipment for conventional sieges.
