History & Significance

Even after the main Scottish invasion of 1138, David I continued to extract resources from northern England through periodic raids. The Bishop of Durham's rich lands were an attractive target. These raids during the Anarchy maintained Scottish pressure on northern England and helped fund David I's ambitious building programme — he founded more monasteries than any other Scottish king.
