The Battle

History & Significance

Bernard de Neufmarche defeats and kills Rhys ap Tewdwr last independent king of Deheubarth in battle near Brecon, completing the conquest of southeast Wales. Rhys death at the battle effectively opens all of south Wales to Norman penetration and leads to the castle-building wave that establishes Marcher lordship across Deheubarth. The conquest of Wales proper begins here.
