The Battle

History & Significance

At Glen Trool in March 1307 Bruce lured an English force under Aymer de Valence's subordinates into the narrow glen and ambushed them from the hillside above Loch Trool, rolling boulders down and attacking with archery from concealed positions. The ambush, small in scale, was strategically critical: it was Bruce's first successful offensive action after months of flight following Methven and Dal Righ, demonstrating that his force had recovered cohesion and could defeat English cavalry in mountain terrain.
