History & Significance

Lord Lewis Gordon maintained Jacobite control of northeast Scotland through the winter of 1745–46, pressing men and supplies from Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and the Gordon estates. His operations — including the Battle of Inverurie already in the DB — kept the northeast as a Jacobite recruitment ground and supply area. Gordon country provided a significant proportion of the Jacobite army. These operations involved numerous minor skirmishes, coercive levies and the suppression of pro-government activities in the coastal towns.
