History & Significance

Doune Castle was used by the Jacobites during the 1715 rising to imprison government sympathisers captured during Mar's campaign. Over 100 prisoners were held there at various times. The castle remained a key Jacobite facility until the rising collapsed after Sheriffmuir. Several prisoners later escaped by tying bed sheets together and climbing down the walls.
