The Battle

History & Significance

During the Great Revolt against Henry II in 1173-74, Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, raised East Anglia for the rebels. Henry II's counter-offensive was devastating; after the capture of William the Lion of Scotland, rebel support collapsed. Bigod's castles including Norwich were surrendered. The rebellion was the last serious baronial challenge to Henry II's authority.
