The Battle

History & Significance

In 1262 Llywelyn ap Gruffudd launched a coordinated attack on the Mortimer Marcher lordships, defeating English forces near Rhaeadr Gwy and capturing a series of castles including Cefnllys. The campaign was part of a broader Welsh resurgence that would eventually lead to the Treaty of Montgomery 1267, in which Henry III formally recognised Llywelyn as Prince of Wales. The Mortimers, who would later play a crucial role in the downfall of Wales in 1282, were temporarily humiliated.
