The Battle

History & Significance

After Dunbar, Edward I made a triumphant tour of Scotland from Berwick to Elgin, receiving submissions at every major town. At Perth the Scottish nobility swore fealty; at Scone the Stone of Destiny was removed to Westminster where it would remain for 700 years. At Montrose, John Balliol was formally stripped of his kingship and crown. The submission process was documented in the Ragman Roll, recording 1,800 Scottish nobles who swore allegiance. Several who signed later repudiated their oaths.
