History & Significance

Cumberland used Aberdeen as his winter base before the Culloden campaign. His forces conducted anti-Jacobite operations throughout Aberdeenshire, suppressing support for the rising. Various skirmishes occurred as government patrols hunted Jacobite foragers and agents. Aberdeen's largely Episcopalian and Jacobite sympathising population suffered under Cumberland's occupation.
