History & Significance

Malcolm IV conducted a campaign to assert Scottish authority in Argyll, the western highland territory that had long been controlled by semi-independent lords with Norse-Gaelic cultural ties. The campaign complemented the Galloway pacification and was part of Malcolm's systematic effort to extend direct royal authority across Scotland. Somerled of Argyll remained defiant however and would mount his great invasion by sea in 1164.

Forces Involved

Malcolm IV: c. 1,500–2,500 troops. Argyll lords: c. 800–1,500 warriors.
