The Battle

History & Significance

While Dundee concentrated his Highland army in Perthshire for the Killiecrankie campaign, Jacobite clan operations continued throughout the western Highlands. The MacDonalds of Keppoch, Glengarry and Clanranald launched raids into pro-government areas, attacked supply lines and pressured neutral clans to join the rising. These western Lochaber operations tied down government forces that might otherwise have reinforced Mackay. The Macleans of Duart rose for James and seized their traditional clan grounds in Mull and Morvern. The whole western seaboard from Kintyre to Skye became contested ground in 1689 as government and Jacobite forces struggled for clan allegiance.
